UNIDO support for ECREEE and new regional sustainable energy centers in Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific

VIENNA, 13 December 2013 – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the operational unit of the Austrian Development Cooperation, signed agreements to support the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) and to set up three more centres in East and Southern African and in the Caribbean region.

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), in partnership with the USAID Regional Clean Energy Investment Initiative (RCEII), the Climate Technology Initiative Private Financing Advisory Network, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), the West African Development Bank (BOAD, in French), and the Africa Biofuel and Renewable Energy Company (ABREC), organized the ECOWAS Renewable Energy Investment Week, from 8 to 10 October 2013 in Accra, Ghana.

The Prime Minister of Cape Verde Dr. Jose Maria Neves led an entourage of government ministers to pay a working visit to ECREEE Secretariat on Thursday, November 14th, 2013. The government delegation was composed by: Mr. Antero Veiga, Minister for Environment, Housing and Spatial Planning; Mr. Humberto Brito, Minister for Energy, Tourism and Economy; Ms. Sara Lopes, Minister for Infrastructure and Maritime Economy and Mr. Jorge Borges, Minister for External Relations.

ECOWAS Experts build capacity on Access to Sustainable Energy for all with Gas

ECREEE, in partnership with the International Gas Union (IGU), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the ECOWAS Commission, and the Société National d’Opérations Pétrolières de la Côte d’Ivoire (PEREOCI), organized a two-day training seminar on ‘Access to Sustainable Energy for All with Gas’, in Abidjan, Côte d’Iovire, from 4 -5 November, 2013.

AMERICAN INVESTORS VISIT ECREEE

On 29 August 2013, ECREEE had the honor of receiving at its headquarters in Praia, Cape Verde, a high-level American Investment delegation. They were Mr. Terry Henry - CEO and Mr. Troy Henry - President of the Global Perpetual Energy Company Inc., an independent energy company involved in the acquisition, exploration, and development of oil and gas properties in Canada.

ECOWAS National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAPs)

The action plan of the ECOWAS Renewable Energy Policy (EREP) foresees that by the end of 2014, all fifteen ECOWAS countries shall adopt National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAPs) and policies (NREPs) which will contribute to the achievement of the regional ECOWAS targets by 2020 and 2030. In response, ECREEE is currently developing a practical framework for the development, implementation and monitoring of the NREAPs and NREPs by 2030. 

PARLEMENTARY DELEGATION FROM EAST TIMOR VISITS ECREEE HEADQUARTERS

The Commission of Infrastructure, Transport and Communications of the National Parliament of East Timor visited the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable energy and Energy Efficiency on a fact-finding mission and to carry out a comparative study of the Center’s activities, programs and projects.

Mr. Pedro dos Mártires da Costa, President of the Commission led an 11-member delegation, and noted that this study will help East Timor make sustainable investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

20th July, 2013 - A Parliamentary Delegation from Angola comprising members of a specialized Commission for State Administration and Local Governance paid a visit to the ECOWAS Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE). The delegation was led by Dr. Joaquim dos Reis accompanied by Dr. Estevão José Pedro and Elisa Cata, both deputies of the Angolan National Assembly.

The ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government adopts the ECOWAS Policies on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

The 43rd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, which held in Abuja, Nigeria from July 17 – 18, 2013 renewed its commitment to the provision of access to sustainable energy services in West Africa by adopting the ECOWAS Energy Efficiency Policy as well as the ECOWAS Renewable Energy Policy.  The Authority also directed the ECOWAS Commission to take all the necessary measures to facilitate the implementation of the corresponding action plans of the two path-breaking policies.
